The week saw multiple arrests across Durban this past week.
Cleverly concealed bush-camera technology alerted an Amanzimtoti resident to an intruder on his property which led to a successful arrest of a theft-suspect on Sunday.
“When he noticed the trespasser making his way to a caravan parked on the property the resident immediately notified the Blue Security Control Centre of the events unfolding,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.
“After skulking around the caravan the bush-camera showed the suspect proceed to break into the vehicle. He seemed to be carrying a weapon but the item was later found to be a tool resembling a firearm,” Mathios said.
“A few minutes later the suspect was observed exiting the caravan carrying a number of items of value. These items which were later positively identified to belong to the owner,” he said.
“Blue Security armed response officers arrived at the scene just in time to nab the suspect as he was exiting the property’s driveway. He was detained and handed over to Amanzimtoti SAPS for further processing,” he said.
Another successful arrest, by Blue Security, in Amanzimtoti on Sunday involved that of a copper-theft suspect.
“A sharp-eyed armed response officer on patrol noticed a suspect carrying a large number of copper pipes on the corner of Bowen Street and Umdoni Road,” Mathios said.
“When confronted, the suspect admitted that the copper pipes had been removed from a property in Kings Road,” he said.
“The suspect was handed to Amanzimtoti SAPS for further investigation,” he said.
Swift actions by Hillary residents on Monday morning resulted in a successful citizens’ arrest of a theft suspect.
“Blue Security was alerted to the incident which occurred just after 6am. A nurse had been walking to the bus stop when she was confronted by a suspect who robbed her of her cellphone and handbag,” Mathios said.
“Her screams alerted residents in the area who rallied to her aid. The neighbours did not hesitate in giving chase on foot thus successfully apprehending the theft-suspect,” he said.
“Blue Security assisted with the arrest and took over from the residents. Much to the victim’s relief her handbag, containing her purse, cash and cellphone, was recovered with all contents still intact,” he said.
In another incident on Saturday morning, near Tollgate Bridge on the Berea, an alert Blue Security armed response officer successfully apprehended a suspect in possession of stolen goods.
“The officer had responded to a housebreaking incident in the Musgrave area, earlier that morning, where suspects had removed a garden table from the property,” Mathios said.
“A few hours later, whilst travelling along Ridge Road in response to a separate callout, the officer observed two suspects carrying a garden table matching the description of the one removed earlier,” he said.
“He called for backup as he approached Tollgate Bridge and, with assistance, was successful in apprehending one of the suspects,” he said.
“When questioned, the man could not account for the table being in his possession and was placed under arrest. He was taken back to the property where the theft had been reported and a delighted resident positively identified the table as his,” he said.
“The suspect was handed over to Berea SAPS for further processing,” he said.
A final arrest for the weekend occurred in Chatsworth in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“A trespasser had gained access to a home’s balcony by jumping onto the carport,” Mathios said.
“Blue Security was alerted when the resident activated their panic alarm. An armed response officer successfully apprehended the suspect as he was attempting to flee via the neighbour’s yard,” he said.
